Mikhail Bulgakov’s famous satirical novella Heart of a Dog is already 100 years old, and all the more striking is the fact that the story of a century ago is repeating itself today: once again, the intelligentsia finds itself unwanted in its own country, ruled by Sharikovs and Shvonders.
At the time, Heart of a Dog was banned and circulated only through samizdat. But after the release of the film adaptation starring Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, the novella gained a new life, became widely known among readers, and attracted the attention of major theatre directors. Today, this work feels more relevant than ever, which makes it the right moment to bring it back to the stage and reinterpret it anew.
Heart of a Dog is a performance made up of questions without answers. Through video design, new media tools, and contemporary theatrical technologies, it attempts to understand why the events of the early 20th century are repeating themselves in a new turn of history. The story of Soviet Moscow leaves Russia, where it was written, and travels to the places where Bulgakov’s present-day audience has emigrated.
